GAZA WATER PURIFICATION
USING SOLAR ENERGY DEVICES
An initiative by Palestinian engineer Enas Al-Ghoul, based in Gaza, to build solar-powered desalination devices that turn seawater and well water into drinkable water amid severe water shortages in Gaza.
A solar-powered desalination setup that operates solely on direct sunlight with zero operational costs, producing water that is completely free of salinity, sterilized, and clean. The water is desalinated using distillation process.
The device is a wooden box enclosed with glass and leather that is perforated with holes for water to enter and exit. Water is heated using solar energy, which evaporates to steam and then condenses to return to a liquid state, then passed through a layer of activated charcoal to purify. The water is dripped into a channel that is connected to a pipe. The impurities are removed and water comes out as fresh water.
The device, measuring 4 meters in length, produces 166 liters of water daily, totaling 5,000 liters per month.
Device Features
- No electricity required
- No solar panels required
- Easy to use
- Inexpensive
- Portable setup & easy to transport.
- Flexible setup – the device can made of different dimensions
Solving Major Water Issues
The seawater and groundwater both have been contaminated by sewage in Gaza. This device addresses four major issues:
- Scarcity of drinking water.
- Salinity of well-water.
- Pollution of sea-water and well-water.
- The need for seawater desalination.
OBJECTIVE
Enas Al-Ghoul aims to build maximum solar-powered desalination devices for the displaced people of Gaza, especially in the areas of North Gaza amid the ongoing war. The devices will be placed in the displacements camps and roof tops of buildings in Gaza to solve severe water crisis.
“According to UNRWA, about 67 percent of water and sanitation facilities and infrastructure in Gaza have been destroyed or damaged since Oct 7″
Help Enas al-ghoul to build solar-powered water purification devices for the residents of Gaza
According to Al-Ghoul, the materials required to build this device are available in Gaza. She has already built a device for shelter center with 5,000 displaced people and at the roof-top of house. Al-ghoul is in need of funds to create maximum such devices for the residents of Gaza.
